Direct Democracy Ireland is to host a Direct Democracy Forum next Saturday in Drogheda.

Direct Democracy Ireland has announced that they are to hold a Direct Democracy Forum this coming Sat 3rd Oct in Millmount Drogheda for collective thinking on Policy and a drive forward for Ireland.

Anthony Connor of Direct Democracy Ireland stated:

It’s a great honour and privilege for Direct Democracy Ireland Louth to be selected as the hosts of this unique event the first of its kind to be held in Louth. We will soon be launching a nation-wide campaign to have the provision of “Direct Democracy” reinstated to our National Constitution for a fairer more equal Ireland. The campaign will involve a series of public meetings and the distribution leaflets door to door. The Forum will cover themes specific to the issue of policy, but the main aim is to reinforce the drive forward in having the provisions of “Direct Democracy” as contained in articles 47 & 48 reinstated to a our National Constitution and we are using as a platform the imminent General Election to do exactly that.

Ronan Mooney chairman of Direct Democracy Ireland Louth added why do we need the provisions of “Direct Democracy” reinstated to our National Constitution:

A common complaint about representative democracy is that it creates a distant class of law-makers who will often collude with vested interests, or become so detached from the lives of the general public, that they will make decisions that the public do not support. By contrast, in a Direct Democracy system, such corruption of decision-making is impossible if every citizen is an equally powerful participant in the process.

Anthony Connor went on to say:

“We are seeing our Communities neglected and under attack from our say one thing do another representatives, by means of cruel austerity measures, unjust water charges, unjust Property taxes, cuts to services, cuts to welfare payments. Fine Gael and The Labour Party under the watchful eye of Minister Ged Nash and Fergus O’Dowd have targeted careers, the unemployed, the young, the elderly and lone parents to name but a few.

Louth in particular has had a sufficient amount of disappointment. We have seen job losses in huge numbers and little or no creation of gainful employment or investment from this government. Recent job losses and redundancy announcements in Louth and the wider area have all had a crippling effect on families, businesses and communities. There haven’t been any announcements of any importance expressed by the IDA in recent times to bring investment into Louth.

The Policy Forum is in the Martello Room, Millmount, Drogheda this coming Sat 3rd Oct from 10.30am-17.00pm.

Direct Democracy Ireland hits out at what it sees as political policing in Drogheda, Co Louth.

A statement from Pat Greene on his re-election to the post of leader of Direct Democracy Ireland.

It is an honor and privilege to be elected once again, by the membership, to lead Direct Democracy Ireland. I accept it with humility, with excitement and with a profound sense of the duty. I joined Direct Democracy Ireland because of what I believed it will do for our country, and more than ever I believe that Direct Democracy is the only future safeguard for Irish Citizens. You have put your trust in me and I undertake to repay that trust with unstinting service and dedication to Direct Democracy Ireland, and its members, ensuring that we in Direct Democracy Ireland can fulfill the ideals of or mission as stated in our mission statement.

We in Direct Democracy Ireland have faced many challenges on our journey to date, but we all share a common vision for our country, and while we are all firm in our objectives, we will be flexible in our approach so as to encourage groups, and Parties and others to strive to implement a policy of returning the provisions of Direct Democracy to our nation's constitution.

Pat Greene

Our ever increasing membership is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the members of this Great movement, not since the Civil War has Ireland seen the people of Ireland unite for a new way forward, that way forward must be for change, change from a system that has concentrated power that is then controlled by a few to the detriment of society at large. We look to a bright future where political power ultimately rests with the people.

We accept that mistakes have been made on this journey that we have undertaken. We are a new movement, we are a young movement, but we are a strong movement. We will stay the course and strive to improve by learning from the past, building from a firm foundation upon which we will create real change for our nation, our peoples future.

Direct Democracy Ireland’s focus must always be for the people of Ireland who have endured the brunt of Austerity measures been forced upon them by The Fine Gael/Labour Party Government. Direct Democracy Ireland will present to the people of Ireland a genuine and realistic alternative to the current system of governance in the next general election.

We must work with our critics, who obviously understand the power of Direct Democracy but chose to snipe from a distance, constantly badgering our Members and not the message: the saying “play the ball and not the man” comes to mind. Direct Democracy Ireland will always be willing to form alliances with others to set about change.

We have an updated constitution, a constitution more fitting to a Movement that is rapidly growing, a constitution that is focused on the membership allowing us to grow, and a constitution that has the people of Ireland at the heart of this modern Democratic Movement.

Our updated Mission Statement reflects our newly invigorated drive towards a society of equals, a society that engages in decision making, a society that empowers the people not lobbyists, a society based on the community not on the economy, ultimately a drive to empower our society to effect self-determination by having the ability to defend ourselves from those who may wish to enslave us. Our mission statement may be short in words but it is enormous in its intent.

Our Mission Statement:

We at Direct Democracy Ireland believe that Direct Democracy provisions are a living Political and Social process of Governance of a Nation belonging to and giving the Sovereign Irish People the inalienable right of unfettered Political Accountability, Transparency and Directability from their Elected Representatives / Politicians / Public Officials at Local, National and International Levels

Regards and thank you to all concerned,

Direct Democracy Ireland slam political politicians who have their snouts in the public purse

Direct Democracy Ireland have this week slammed the politicians who have claimed, at the expense of the taxpayer, cash to help run their Parties. The Standards in Public Office Commission report, confirmed that the tax-free windfall payments were paid out to what was deemed qualified political parties, and more outrageous is the fact these payments are not subject to income tax.

Last year alone €12.6 million was paid out, so if you take that that over a term of Government which is 5 years that’s equates to €63 million: a shocking insult to the people of this country who have bore the brunt of Austerity. How many houses would this money build, how many extra nurses, how many extra hospital beds, how many hungry families would this money help feed?

The list could go on stated Anthony Connor, General Secretary of Direct Democracy Ireland. Four parties (Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Sinn Féin and the Labour Party) received funding of €5.5 million. The sum received by Fine Gael was €2.2 Million The Labour Party €1.2 Million, Fianna Fail €1.1 Million, and Sinn Fein landed €720,000. Further lump sums were also given to 3 other qualifying bodies, Anti Austerity Alliance, People Before Profit and Stop The Water Tax (The Socialist Party). More cash was also dished out to the Independent TD’s - €563,866 -and Independent Senators - €249,130. And all this on top of their already over the top expenses.

These payments of an allowance for parliamentary activities has been provided for in a series of Acts since 1938 in or around the same time direct democracy was removed from our Constitution which is ironic given that under the direct democracy system politicians were fully accountable to the people and these over the top payments would never have met with their approval.

And what can we do about this? Nothing. Because the current regurgitated system allows this. We need to change the system. We need Direct Democracy.

Anthony Connor

Connor went on to say:

Direct Democracy Ireland struggle to compete with the major political parties, not in terms of offering realistic change but in terms of the ability to get our message out there, to educate the people of Ireland. Finance is an issue but we would rather go without than claim such large sums from the un-expecting taxpayer. Direct Democracy Ireland is about changing the whole system to stop these kinds of payments to already mega rich political Parties. The system is designed to keep them in and us out.
