20 years on from the momentous events of August 1994 and the historic IRA ceasefire of that time, movement towards the reunification of Ireland has been sparse on the ground with Irish Unity arguably as far away as ever. Promises of a new and final phase of struggle to secure British withdrawal and the realisation of a sovereign Irish republic have failed to materialise, with the energies of Irish republicanism pinned down under the weight of the 1998 British-Irish Agreement and its ability to deliver, if nothing else, a degree of peace to the long-troubled six-counties while preserving the strategic interests of the British state in Ireland.

Last week, Cogús POW department learned that Roe 3 POW Danny McClean broke his arm while playing a game of football in the Maghaberry prison yard. Cogús were informed that Danny would be taken out of the prison to a hospital, where he would undergo an assessment to deem if the arm was broken.

PSNI IN THE SPOTLIGHT: THE COLLAPSING CREDIBILITY OF THE 'NEW DISPENSATION'
The vast majority of people from Omagh and beyond watching the recent BBC Spotlight investigation into PSNI abuse in the town no doubt found the programme a disturbing insight into the reality of policing in both Omagh and across the north of Ireland, a reality that flies in the face of what some have attempted to present as a 'new beginning to policing'. Images of police officers using brute violence against ordinary people - innocent bystanders out for a night's craic - surely put pay to any notion of a new policing dispensation and a separation between the behaviour of the PSNI and its predecessor, the disgraced RUC.

The annual Brendan Hughes Memorial Lecture will take place on Saturday 3rdMay at 7.00pm in The Donegal Celtic Social Club, Belfast.
The guest speakers will be renowned human rights advocate Gareth Peirce and Independent TD Clare Daly. The theme is be “Draconian Laws, Draconian Government”.
