1916 Societies🪑are hosting an event in Strabane.

Join us for an evening with Seamus Kearney as he shares a hard-hitting account of his pursuit to uncover the truth behind the execution of his brother, Michael Kearney, and the complex network that surrounded the treacherous figure known as 'Stakeknife'.

Date: Friday 26th April

Time: 7:30pm

Location: The Fir Trees, Strabane

Hosted by: The Local 1916 Societies

This event will dig deep into the depths of state sponsored murder and corruption, offering unique insights into the dual roles played by key figures at the time. Kearney's story is one of determination, as he navigates through layers of secrecy to seek the truth and uncover ‘Stakeknife’

What to Expect:

* An in-depth look at the counter-insurgency war and the murky role of 'Stakeknife'.

* A personal and moving narrative of brotherhood and betrayal, vividly brought to life through Kearney's experiences, as chronicled in his book, "No Greater Love."

* Insights into Kearney's journey from a young volunteer to an IRA staff officer and his harrowing time on the blanket protest in the H-Blocks, and his firsthand account of the 1981 hunger strike.

* An open Q&A session where Seamus Kearney will discuss the broader themes of the war.

We look forward to hosting an event that promises to challenge perceptions and reveal the extreme measures the British state and their agents were prepared to take to infiltrate, disrupt, and destroy the IRA. Exposing how they turned a blind eye to torture and murder to protect the identity of Stakeknife.

Kearney's book "No Greater Love" serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression and is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the epic struggle of the Blanket Protest and Hunger Strike of 1981.

Spread the Word.

Per the request of City Hall, the final guest list must be submitted by December 3, so please register your intent to participate at the latest by 5pm on that day by completing this form.

For the first time in France, an international conference bringing together defenders of Laicity from across the world is being held during 8-9 December 2023 at the Auditorium of Paris City Hall.

The conference is co-organised by Laïques Sans Frontières (LSF), a 1901 Law association created in January 2023 in Paris, and the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain (CEMB), in collaboration with the Comité Laïcité Republic (CLR) and EGALE.

This event will take place in partnership with the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, Marianne magazine, Freedom from Religion Foundation (USA), National Secular Society (UK) and Center for Inquiry (USA).

The uprising of Iranians demanding a civil state reinforces our idea that all people aspire to freedom. It seems urgent and essential to us to bring together those throughout the world who fight for freedom of conscience, freedom of expression and for Laicity, in particular those from the "Muslim world" who often risk their lives as unbelievers or worse, apostates.

There are "atheists in Islam" and we believe that Laicity is the condition to ensure them a life worthy of free citizens in their countries. This movement of "ex-Muslims", which grows from year to year and Muslim believers who defend laicity, need international solidarity.

The event will bring together over 40 Laic figures, coming from the four corners of the globe, such as Nadia El Fani, Tunisian and French filmmaker, Maryam Namazie, Iranian Campaigner and Spokesperson of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain, Hamadi Redissi, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tunis and author of "Expressing yourself freely in Islam," Joumana Haddad, Lebanese Writer and Feminist Activist, Rana Ahmed, Saudi refugee in Germany and Founder of Atheist Refugee Relief, Marieme Helie Lucas, Algerian Sociologist and Founder of Secularism is a Women’s Issue, and many others.

Panellists will address the intersection between Laicity and women's rights, atheism in the Islamic context, contemporary challenges related to Laicity and its role in preserving democracy. Democracy cannot be full and complete where religion dictates its rules.

This conference is in line with previously conferences organised by the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain bringing together atheists from around the world, entitled "Celebrating Dissent", which were held in London (2014 and 2017), Amsterdam (2019) and Cologne (2022).

For LSF, it was time for Paris to relay these voices that are rising to demand the separation of religion and the state on a global scale.

Ancient Order of Hibernians ✒ will be hosting a webinar to discuss the British government's plans to press ahead with its legacy bill. The webinar is scheduled to take place on Saturday June 10 @ 10 AM Eastern Time, 3 PM Irish time.

FREEDOM for ALL IRELAND
By its appointment of former Chief Justice Declan Morgan to head its new legacy commission, the British government is clearly signaling its intention to move ahead with the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill, despite overwhelming opposition by victims’ relatives, human rights campaigners, the Irish government and all major six county political parties.

With British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arriving in Washington, victims’ relatives are making an emergency appeal for American help, as their best hope to stop a bill designed to cut off legal channels for justice. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick will join victims’ relative Patsy Kelly, civil rights lawyer Niall Murphy, and justice campaigner Andree Murphy in a live webinar broadcast, hosted by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, (AOH) this Saturday, June 10th, at 10 AM Eastern Time, 3 PM Irish time.

The British amnesty bill, aims to discard Britain’s Stormont House Agreement on legacy mechanisms with the Irish government, and end criminal cases, Historical Investigations, Inquests, civil suits or Ombudsman investigations which could give the truth in hundreds cases including British crown force or collusion killings. Instead the British want to set-up an Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) which victims’ relatives fear will bury the truth along with the victims.

Although the amnesty bill has not yet been passed at Westminster, the British have already announced the appointment of retired Chief Judge Declan Morgan to head the Commission.

Panelists

Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, has been one of the leading Washington voices on Irish issues and a driving force on a series of Congressional initiatives, House Resolutions and Briefings on legacy justice. Most recently he co-signed a strongly worded letter to British Secretary Chris Heaton Harris, expressing deep disappointment at the moves to push ahead with an amnesty bill despite the opposition of nationalist and unionist victims.

Patsy Kelly Jr., is the son of Independent Councillor Patsy Kelly who was abducted from work in County Tyrone and murdered in July 1974. The family has always believed the murder was carried out by members of the British Army’s Ulster Defense Regiment and a recent Ombudsman Investigation ruled that there had been collusive behavior by the Royal Ulster Constabulary. Now the Kelly family’s 50 year fight for justice is threatened by the proposed British amnesty bill.

Civil rights lawyer, Niall Murphy will explain the legal implications of the amnesty law and how badly the law will effect families who have waited decades for truth and would be compelled to begin a long legal battle to the European Court of Human Rights.

Andree Murphy, the Deputy Chair of Relatives for Justice, will discuss the importance of American help in the continuing political and legal battle for legacy justice.

Bloody Sunday March Committee ✊ Crowds will assemble again at the Creggan shops on January 29th for the 51st annual Bloody Sunday march.

Back then, nobody expected that the trek towards the truth would take so long. But too late to stop now. We can’t leave the Bloody Sunday story unfinished.

If we were to do as we’re told and stop pushing for the full truth, Britain’s rulers would heave a huge sigh of relief, believing they’d gotten away with murder. We owe it to the victims, and to victims of imperialism everywhere, not to flinch or falter now.

It is not true that Bloody Sunday was perpetrated by an undisciplined, unrepresentative bunch of brutes in Parachute Regiment uniforms. The murder spree was ordered and orchestrated by the top brass of the British army in connivance with the Tory government of the day.

Nobody now would dare suggest that the massacre at Sétif and Guelma in Algeria in May 1945, or at My Lai in Vietnam in March 1968, or at Bucha in Ukraine in March last year, could be explained by reference to out-of-control members of the French or American or Russian armies.

In all these instances, as on Bloody Sunday, the men who pulled the triggers were doing what they’d been ordered to do by their political and military masters. The murders were done in service of the State.

This is the truth which history must be made to record. The British ruling class wants to tell the world that Bloody Sunday may have been a terrible event - but it’s all sorted now, no need to be rude to the Royals or their Empire anymore.

The Bloody Sunday March Committee takes a different view. We march for all those everywhere who have lost family and friends and had their children’s hopes of happiness shattered by the armoured cars and tanks and guns of imperial armies.

It would be putting it a bit strong to say that the truth will set us free. But without the truth about Bloody Sunday we will never be free of the terrible legacy the massacre left for Derry and the world.

A full programme of events has been organised for the week beginning Monday 23th January 2023.

Bloody Sunday March For Justice 2023

Swords to Ploughshares Ireland (StoP) is hosting an online public meeting on “Human and Ecological Security: an Alternative to War & Militarism” on Wednesday, November 9 from 8 to 9 PM.

The event is free, but registration is necessary. Please register at Eventbrite.

The speakers will be Diana Francis, British peace activist and author, and John Maguire, StoP member and member of the board of Afri (Action from Ireland). John Lannon of StoP and Shannonwatch will moderate the discussion. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion from participants.

The dominant narrative about security characterises it as a military or state-based process preoccupied with political and economic power. This militarised approach to security is causing widespread human suffering and environmental destruction for the benefit of a small elite with a vested interest in perpetuating militarism.

We are calling for a new vision of human and ecological security that challenges this current preoccupation with military security. Human and ecological security that meets real human needs and protects the planet can form the basis of an active and constructive use of Irish neutrality as a central part of Irish foreign policy.

Diana Francis is a lifelong peace campaigner in Britain who has spent many years supporting people who were trying to address violent social and political conflict in different parts of the world, acting as a facilitator, trainer, mediator and accompanier. She has written several books based on her experience. She is a founding member of Rethinking Security and, having now retired from travel, puts all her time into campaigning in Britain.

John Maguire is Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University College Cork, and a board member of Afri (Action from Ireland). He is the author of Defending Peace (Cork University Press 2002) and, with Joe Noonan, of Maastricht and Neutrality (People First/Meitheal 1992).

The event is organised in partnership with AFRI (Action from Ireland) and INNATE (Irish Network for Non -Violent Action & Training)
