This is such a scandalous case, absolute religious bigotry all because this woman is a Christian. I cannot believe this is happening in 2018! For anyone not following the case here is a summary of the outrageous details.
Asia Bibi is a Christian woman and mother of 5 who had been charged with Blasphemy in Pakistan. She spent 8 years in jail and was sentenced to death. A court then released her but she is not allowed to leave Pakistan which is akin to giving her the death penalty anyway as the people there have promised to murder her. They have already murdered two government officials who had been supporting her.
How it all started was she went off to get water from the well while she was out picking berries in the field with local Muslim women. She took a drink of the water from a ladle and the Muslim women went bonkers as she is a Christian and they said only Muslims could drink from it as Christians are dirty. They beat her and taunted her telling her to convert to Islam.
One woman who had a previous grudge against her due to a family row then made an allegation that Asia said in retort to the demands for her to convert to Islam:
I believe in my religion and in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for the sins of mankind. What did your Prophet Mohammed ever do to save mankind? And why should it be me that converts instead of you?
This woman then went to the police, Asia was arrested and charged with Blasphemy and sentenced to death. That is the whole story in a nutshell, it is unbelievable.

You missed out an interesting addendum that her application for asylum to the U.K. was denied/or would be denied on the basis of the potential for unrest her presence might bring.
ReplyDeleteThis story broke just in time for Remembrance Sunday in the U.K. and was the cause of much despair amongst those commentators who imagine Britain as a beacon of liberty unto the darker parts of the world.
It was brought in to contrast how returning IS fighters and their families were accommodated upon their return from Syria , and was yet another item to speculate on whether those under Flanders fields would of given their lives for such a thing. The timing was just perfect.
