Capricious, Mean-Minded, Stupid God

Stephen Fry at his brilliant best, cutting through the God myth with clinical logic.

Anthony,

An interview that was recorded sometime back, what took you so long to put it up!!?
Insects inducing blindness in children? Searing logic that is always going to challange those of us who believe in the concept of a creator. There seems to be no credible answers.

Robert,

it was prompted by one I saw last week, remembered the Fry one and thought I'd run it.

As the Creator is not a credible proposal, there will be no credible responses to Fry.

The searing logic will not challenge the believer. Theirs is a need to believe not a need to know.

Good to have you back with us for a while.

Bone cancer in children indeed. Suffering is one of those phenomena that theists have no answers for. In the Bible suffering is imposed on people either by the devil, or by God as a punishment for sin or as a test of faith. None of those withstand logic or reason if an omnipotent god is presumed. The world's foremost New Testament theologian and ancient Greek translator Bart Ehrman lost his faith over the concept of suffering and his debates with theists are available on Youtube also.

Yes indeed a god who from all appearances revels in sadism, both in the physical and natural, from cancers to insects that destroy his "likeness"creation and in the most horrible way, then really why the fuck would you want to honour a cunt like this , or indeed obey his so called teachings esp when those who claim to be his chosen ones are almost all some sort of perv,as Friedrich Nitzche said"is man merely a mistake of god ,or god merely a mistake of man "but perhaps old Napoléon got it right ,"religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich "

AM said...

Marty,

like yourself I find the lot of it nonsense. But I regard the right to hold a religious opinion a fundamental element in the healthy composition of society. Much as I feel about the right of a person to support whatever football team they want. The problem starts when they start insisting that others live in accordance with their beliefs or football colours. People should have a right to freedom of religion alongside people having the right to be free from religion. That can be accommodated within a society. Practice religion on oneself but not on others.

If we look at the Intelligent design controversy in America - they tried to have religion taught as science in schools even while admitting in court that it was on a par with astrology. This aggressive religion has to be pushed back by any democratic society.

My opinion is rather than an outright ban on all religious teachings is to add in the atheist theory and none of this should be taught until the children are into their teens , that I believe would be the death knell to all that crap, but hey a level playing field ,that for sure aint gonna happen,I totally agree everyone has his/her right to hold any opinion no matter what, but as long as that is privately held no problem the trouble is when priests start sticking their gods staff up your arse in gods name at least giz a £5er for a drink ,

To some just politics really but to others something more. Totally agree AM...right to have a faith but no right to impose it on others....

AM, religion isnt the only ideology being taught as truth to kids. I think at last count social sciences departments in the US had a 400/1 Democrat/Republican leaning. Universities as a whole was 6/1. When you realise that what these little bastards are dreaming up will criminalise us all, Creatonism isnt such a concern. Better get learning these 72 gender pro-nouns. (PS I wonder if SF progressives will try and claim there were trans in PIRA?)

DaithiD said...

ps the 400/1 is in terms of lecturers leanings (incase that wasnt clear). Of course the same people will hit you in head with bike locks in the name of diversity!

AM said...

DaithiD,

teaching creationism as science is bonkers and should be prohibited. As for what the social scientists teach, I don't know. But you would need to show us some specifics. But 400/1 is unhealthy.

Good to see Free State RTE parasite extraordinaire GAY Byrne recoiling under the forcefulness of the opinions.

Guys, suffering is NOT a problem for Christians to explain, though it is to any religion or 'Christian' group that ignores the Bible.

The historic Christian position is that suffering and death exist in the world due to man's rebellion in Eden. Since then all of Adam's descendants have inherited his fallen condition - they are sinners and subject to the suffering and death that their separation from God caused.

You may reject that account of the origins of suffering and death, but you should see that suffering and death is not a 'phenomena that theists have no answers for'.

That leaves the other explanation, that is held by atheists and the rest - suffering and death are natural, indeed essential to the process that has brought evolution to its present state.

All your - correct - sadness and empathy in the face of suffering and death indicates you know life is more than sophisticated chemical reactions. You know we are persons, morally accountable beings. Our suffering and death point us to the need to be reconciled with our Creator, and tells us that something has gone dreadfully wrong and needs fixing before it is too late.

The Biblical gospel is exactly about that rescue.

Romans 5:18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

No more bonkers than Adam and Eve a snake and a forbidden fruit even Tolkien kept it more believable , the whole lot should be in a special category for kids who want to examine population control, its methods and results ..

And heres me thinking my creator was a leaky Durex

AM, they are teaching along with male and female, there are (at last count) 72 other gender pronouns. Its not enough that they are entitled to use them, they are able to insist we use them on penalty of a hefty fine.At least with Creatonism the immediate effect is limited to the kids who have been taught junk, we can ignore it if we choose.
They are also starting this trend where a person relates their history before putting forth ideas so that their ideas are placed in the context sexual preference/race/gender e.g. "Hi, Im Dandelion, im a US born, queer multiracial, middle class feminist without disablilities, im going to talk about....." if you think this is OTT is broadly taken from a site :

https://www.insidehighered.com/users/conditionally-accepted?page=1

Read the bios on here. If you think this wont become the norm, where someone can never can escape their race/gender/class,take a look what happened 15 years ago on campuses, and see what is legislated now. It was mostly enviromental stuff then, its identity now.
Its the left that often notes how imperialism fractures a society to rule, how does this atomic level of detail not enable this in the mother countries? Does society feel more 'social' than 20 years ago with all this guff?

More glib gibberish from someone who believes the earth is less than 10 thousand years old!

One thing that has struck me about Fry's interview is that this cruel God he speaks off....according to some He also created Fry's partner!!!!! Just saying so don't go jumping down my throat now.

AM said...

Steve R,

I no longer even look at it. Biblical gunk.

The bible is a great example of human skulduggery and scheming which has remained unchanged for thousands of years. Every imaginable evil and underhand stunt ever dreamed up.

Are you not in danger of getting the same attention from the law like Fry now is, for publishing this? The 25k fine seems a bit steep.

AM said...

DaithiD,

unlikely but possible.

This type of law is ridiculous and should be pushed back.

DaithiD said...

AM, the law is one area im slightly in awe of, especially people who can follow it.I knew about Irelands blasphemy law because its being used as an example by Islamist groups in the West to push for equal inclusion of their faith (as if it was needed with the explicit death threats we always face!), but I had also seen people like yourself regularly flout it from Ireland. Ill wait for someone like Christy to decipher it.I wonder what is more dangerous,an uneven application of the law of the law itself. Did you publish the video again because of this case, or is it peculiar timing?

AM said...

DaithiD,

peculiar timing.

We were not aware of the case.
