"Q: What do you say to those people who are unhappy but are pulled the other way by feelings of loyalty?

A: Examine their consciences. Take a good look at what is going on. If they agree - ok. If not then speak out." - Fourthwrite interview with Brendan Hughes

Derry blogger and rights campaigner Pauline Mellon with a piece on the increasing threat to civil liberties posed by the PSNI's political policing. It initially featured on her blog, The Diary of a Derry Mother, on 16 January 2014.

There’s an interesting debate being started in Loyalist circles, and one of those who seems to be leading this is Jamie Bryson of ‘fleg’ protest fame. This comes following the release of Lurgan Republican Martin Corey. Martin Corey who has been released after spending four years in jail with no charges being brought against him now faces severe restrictions as part of his release.

Statement from NBCRA chairperson, Paul Little.

In a statement the chairperson of the North Belfast Civil Rights Association has condemned the decision of the Parades Commission to restrict a February 1st march in North Belfast.

Paul Little said that the NBCRA have a number of concerns regarding the Parades Commission's decisions. Those concerns are primarily that it is a thinly veiled attack on civil liberties and a real lack of transparency around the Stormont regime's secret political influence on the commission.

Dominic McGlinchey Interview: Saying What Needs Said

TPQ features an interview that the republican Dominic McGlinchey gave to Connla Young of the Irish News

Well known in anti-agreement circles Dominic McGlinchey has been a staunch opponent of Sinn Fein's political strategy. But with "little appetite" for armed conflict, the republican activist asks whether the time is right for an end to armed struggle as he urges "conversations" to take place on the future for militant republicanism.

Guest writer, North Belfast republican socialist activist Paul Little drawing attention to a discrepancy in Sinn Fein's narrative in respect of a planned parade by the North Belfast Civil Rights Association.

Following the denial by Sinn Fein in yesterday's Irish News that they made a submission to the Parades Commission in regards to the NBCRA civil rights march we post a copy of the front page of the Parades Commission determination on the march and it clearly states that Sinn Fein did make a submission.

Less than £100 for a life.

This Sunday, 26th January at 2pm at An Realta, King Street, Belfast The Socialist Left Coordinating Committee will be facilitating a public discussion on Left Unity. TPQ carries a statement from the organisers.

The potential of a new political formation in N. Ireland has been simmering for several months. Lately discussions have taken place with major Unions here on the possibility of a People’s Assembly, similar to the formation launched in Britain last summer. These discussions are ongoing.

Guest writer Gerard O’Halloran with a piece expressing his grave concerns about the proposed construction of a new GAA pitch in West Belfast.

The Davitts Club is facing the Dunville Park on the Falls Road. Dunville Park has been upgraded to include a new 3G pitch. This new pitch in the park is right outside the Davitts front door. If you use Google street view you will be able to verify this.

Unite to Overcome Austerity ...

With his own variant of restoration work on Magilligan Prison Frankie McCarron, a onetime denizen of the place, has inserted the Co Derry jail into prison history discourse. Never in the same news-magnet league as Long Kesh, Magilligan existed as something out there, up yonder, tangible but only in outline. Neither archipelago nor gulag, it had a Siberian remoteness to it, seemingly desolate with an inhospitable winter climate to match.

I tend to approach the press with caution always mindful of how some elements of the press portrayed the innocent victims of Bloody Sunday as gunmen and bombers.

Reflect, Think and Give a Voice to the Voiceless

Ed Moloney with a piece on Bodenstown 1969. It initially featured on The Broken Elbow on 7 January 2014.

Hat tip to Mick Browne for directing me to this YouTube video of a rare home movie of the June 1969 Bodenstown commemoration made by Terry McMillen. It is a fascinating piece of film made just two months before the Loyalist incursions of August 1969 which would split the Republican movement and divide many of those marching that day to honour Wolfe Tone, the founding father of Irish Republicanism.

Is This Rare Footage of Gerry Adams at Bodenstown 1969?

Having already enjoyed the one previous Jo Nesbo book that I have read, I looked forward to tackling all his work. Everything in the Harry Hole series was already in the house apart from The Bat which now completes the line up courtesy of having been picked up in a used book ship in town for €1.
