Open Invitation

The 40th anniversary of the death on active service of Derry Brigade IRA Volunteer Michael Meenan will be marked by Republicans on Thursday 30th October.

Michael died on IRA active service on 30th October 1974 aged 16 years of age. He was the youngest fallen Volunteer of the Derry Brigade.

The independent commemoration, organised by the family of Michael Meenan, will take place at the Shantallow Republican Monument. We ask people to assemble at 6.30pm.

Speaking on behalf of the Meenan family, his brother Joe said ‘we are gathering to remember with dignity and pride our brother Michael and all those local Volunteers who died for the noble cause of an Irish Republic founded on the principles of the 1916 Proclamation.

As a family we feel that it is fitting to honour the 40th Anniversary of Michael’s death on Active Service. The event will be led by us, the family of Michael Meenan, and we would encourage all those who knew Michael to attend.

We have always valued the support and solidarity we have been shown by the community in Shantallow and the wider republican family in Derry. We ask that same community to come out on Thursday to honour the life of Michael who made the ultimate sacrifice for Irish freedom and sovereignty.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided afterwards to all those in attendance at the Shantallow Community Centre.
