Anne Devlin Society Belfast To Climb Cave Hill Later This Month

The Committee 9f the Anne Devlin Society Belfast announces Cave Hill walk.

Nuala Perry and comrades

On Saturday October 29th the Anne Devlin Society Belfast are organising a sponsored walk up the Cave Hill. The purpose of the walk is to raise money for our Society, with one-third of all proceeds set aside and to be donated to charity.
There are several reason that we chose to climb Beann Mhadagain (the ancient Gaelic name for the hill).

Firstly, the Cave Hill which rises to 370 metres above sea level (1200ft) has a long republican history which dates back to 1795, when the United Irishmen Henry Joy Mc Cracken and Theobald Wolfe Tone met to take an oath to launch the rebellion.

Some years later Henry Joy would be captured on the Cavehill and subsequently executed. These historical and republican facts undoubtedly add a degree of poignancy to a walk itself a source of natural beauty, steeped as it is in a rebellious history.

Secondly, over the coming weeks and months the Anne Devlin Society intend on holding other and similar historical and commemorative talks which we hope will be of interest to the 1916 Societies – and others – and we intend to use any monies raised to help finance these.

Lastly, we would like to thank all those who have already shown an interest in the walk, as well as those who have pledged money and support. Go raibh maith agaibh, táim ag tnúth le tú a fheiceáil ann – look forward to seeing you there.

  4. Larry,
Lol,I was considering asking about any type of a lift, sadly though, you can only collect the monies if there's visual evidence of walking, and that's up the mountain not down.

  5. I was considering asking HJ to tag along, not in the literal sense of course. Just to reinvigorate that old dying Republican spirit. Provided he's not on any kind of duty.
