The republican party éirígí is contesting local government elections in the North. Its campaign is facing aggressive behaviour which the party has likened to fascism.

The party has no relationship with The Pensive Quill. Some of its membership is openly critical of the Boston College oral history project and have made their position very forthrightly. That is their prerogative. They have every right to express their opposition to that project, even stridently.

Yet it seems this is a courtesy the party is not being afforded by opponents in the election campaign. Its election posters are being defaced or removed in a bid to lessen its visibility.

The attempt to force the éirígí message off the streets is not street politics. It is goonda politics where the writ of the thug is meant to prevail.

It is not necessary to support éirígí to see the value of its participation in elections where it offers an alternative to the political elites at Stormont. But it is very much necessary to speak out against any attempt to drive the party undergound and out of sight.

  1. That's happening everywhere.. I think it's childish the fact that people go about tearing down anyone's election posters because they don't agree with a particular party..

PSF don't own Irish republicanism. Anymore than the DUP own loyalism..(to me both parties are different cheeks of the same arse)....

  2. Totally against this type of racist behaviour. Eirigi have every right to put their policies before the electorate in Belfast and beyond. RNU have also experienced similar mistreatment in and around with our election posters also being removed. It seems some Parties cannot see others advocating an alternative strategy. Good luck to Eirigi for the elections.

  4. Got to the stage I'm making a list of independent candidates in the elections and leaving out mainstream candidates. Those main parties are all career self serving wasters. That includes SF by the way. ENOUGH.
