  1. In one of Martin Dillon books, it is said the the loyalists, in the early 1970, came to Canada, basically to Ontario to visit all Orange Lodges to collect money for the fight againts Catholics. Is there someone at the TPQ who haave more information about the loyalists connection with Canada?

  2. André,

Dillion from i can figure out was talking about John Bingham

He testified that he had seen Bingham armed with an M60 machine gun and claimed that Bingham had been sent to Toronto to raise funds for the UVF. These meetings opened contact with Canadian businessman John Taylor, who became involved in smuggling guns from North America to the UVF

What I know about John Bingham was he shot my uncle dead in Ligoniel. And the day of his funeral his 'comrades' shot dead my daddy's friend in the grounds of Ardoyne Chapel. The reason given was simply 'our friend' got buried today.

Both my uncle (Leo Scullion) and my fathers friend (Raymond Mooney) were both non combatants and easy touches.

  4. So Ed thinks the Padraic Wilson case wont go to court? Is it because he has a 'get out of jail free' card or no one wants/needs another spy ring unearthed?

  5. Frankie,

thanks for the information and sorry for your family. In Canada, we have a different relation with Ireland. Protestants from Ireland migrated must to Canada. Of course, there are Irish catholic communities in all of big towns in Canada, but contrary to the USA there are in Canada a lot of Irish migrant who supppoted loyalism. That link sould be studied. In Quebec, since that must migrants from Ireland were catholics, and because of the national question here, we supported republicans. During the second hunger strike, polical prosoners of the FLQ went on hunger strike in support of Booby Sands. Also, Bernadette Devlin was a big star in the nationalist community here.

First thanks for the translation about the sudents riots in Quebec last year. After talking to my oldest wee girl about the riots etc, she decided to stay in France. And is now into her first year studying law.

My uncle, I hardly new him. I think I met him three times but my mother was close to her brother. She would vist her brother etc every week. I knew Raymond better. Raymond and my father were fairly thick. In fact only Raymond worked the bar that night instead of my old man, it would have been him. Just before Raymond got shot dead the last words used were 'our friend (John Bingham) was buried today.'.

Maybe this link will help you fill in a few blanks.

    ULSTER SCOTS IN CANADA

A road sign for Tyrone in the Province of Ontario is a reminder of County Tyrone, one of the Counties in Northern Ireland or Ulster. It may be an indication that Canada’s settlementwas effected by immigrants from Northern Ireland or Ulster but what was the role of Ulster Scots ? Canada is the second largest country in the world. Its northerly location and varied geography influenced settlement. Furthermore, the shared English and French history effected its development uniquely as did its border with the United States. Barely 15 years after the Battle of Quebec in 1759 when the British triumphed over the French for control of Canada, two County Donegal men with Ulster Scots roots met as leaders of opposing armies to determine its future.

  7. Frankie,

thanks. Just to let you, the government (elected in september 2012) was able to split the student movement by offering an increase of the tuition fees least important then the one proposed by the governement at the time of the students stike. Moderates were satisfied, so it back to business as usual in all universities.
