Former Hunger Striker Gerard Hodgins, writing on behalf of the Family and Friends of Brendan Hughes, responds to comments made by Gerry Adams on Darragh MacIntyre’s documentary on The Dissappeared

Brendan Hughes was an honest and decent human being. His life was spent in the service of his people.

Brendan Hughes, like the rest of us, had his faults; however, one of his signature characteristics was his frankness with others and his honesty with himself.

The Dark lived and died as a man of honour, a soldier of Ireland, and a working-class hero.

Brendan went on the record to say that Gerry Adams was complicit in disappearing people in Belfast; Adams’ defence was to call Brendan a liar. Brendan Hughes was not a liar.

As the fantasy world of Gerry Adams’ happy-ending narrative disintegrates all around him he is reduced to denigrating the memory of one of Ireland’s finest sons.

Brendan Hughes possessed integrity, courage and humility. For him to be publically labelled a “liar” by a man who possesses none of these characteristics is a grievous insult to the memory of Brendan Hughes.

  1. Absolutely correct Gerard the insult and besmirching the memory of two honest and fine republicans in the selfish interests of a man who wouldnt know the truth if it hit him up the beak is way beyond acceptable, its time all republicans say enough is enough and maybe think about dumping the green book mentality which those in quisling $inn £eind have in their haste to get some crumbs from the masters table, Mc Guinness says those volunteers who killed Patsy Gillispie he "could not now Identify and it was a matter for the police" republicans by keeping silent are in effect protecting this scumbag and his mate Gerry Itwasntme they and their cronies are in effect using the republican mantra of "whatever you say say nothing" to their advantage .I think its time we considered changing the record and played a different tune than the ones quisling $inn £eind wants us to hear .

    1. In other words what your saying is that Republicans should inform on their former comrades, Adams for example. I don’t see how that solves anything. I’m not saying the shinners are perfect but it’s a bit rich to call them quislings on one hand and then encourage informing on the other

The Boston college project in my opinion was a failed project. Two of the key organisers Molony and McIntyre are two bitter opponents of Sinn Fein, and a few of those interviewed had turned on Sinn Fein and the Provisional movement. Very clear to see what the agenda was. They call it an “insight into the troubles” which just serves as a cover for a hatchet job on Sinn Féin and the Provos

  2. Gerard,
For that scumbag to say: "Brendan is lying" (why does he talk in the present?) is really beyond belief. I didn't know Brendan (unfortunately) but yourself and AM seemed to know him well. Anyone I talked to about the "Dark" said he was of the utmost integrity and honest and what you see is what you get. I bumped into him a few times, but, as I didn't know him, I didn't say hello or anything like that (I wish I had!). As I said at the beginning of my comment, anyone, and I mean anyone, from the Lower Wack to Poleglass to the Short Strand to the Markets to St. James' to Ardoyne to the New Lodge, not one person ever had a bad word to say about him! He was always down to earth with everyone and didn't want a house in Portugal or Spain or anywhere else! He seemed to be happy among his own people in the Lower Wack! (Apologies AM, for not mentioning the Lower Ormeau there!). Glad you put this on Gerard, as I like many others were "up to a million" after hearing that TOUT Adams say that!

  3. Point well made Gerard.

Many people will conclude that it is a case of the war criminal calling the war hero a liar.

  4. To borrow something that has been used before, GA's tombstone will read -

"Here lies Gerry Adams and lies, and lies and lies..."

  5. well done for putting this on Gerard.

I would say Anthony has put in one sentence to portray Adams as the Liar and Brendan , The war hero.

as we all know this to be true.

Aptly said and it would make a good title for a book or a piece on TPQ.

  6. A picture says a thousand words. Well, one look at the photograph of Brendan Hughes and the impression one gets is that of a compassionate, warm human being. Anyone who knew the man can vouch for his affable manner and engaging smile. Of course, he had his shortcomings and foibles, but these added to the richness of his personality. However, the was also a somberness to him that was born out of his life experience. A sense of regret and mourning for comrades lost. He shouldered a heavy burden of self-recrimination and self-doubt that troubled him greatly.

To his friends he was the real
article. Like so many other former prisoners, he died prematurely of ill health brought on by a hard and difficult life.

  7. No matter how some now want to dress the truth up the Dark before
the con told army tales on Gerry
Adams-some like this but that's their problem-Are ones regretting now that a tricolour was on this mans coffin-
Dolores any price also named Adams as her OC and also said he was involved-both are now dead-Is Gerard Hodgins telling us that Gerry Adams was involved without having any evidence-and him still living-thats a novelty-

  8. I feel calling Brendan a liar could well be the biggest mistake Adams has ever made. While I doubt it will resonate with the wider electorate it surely will amongst provisional republicans, if only with some out of self interest.

When Brendan died Adams described him as "a good-hearted generous comrade, quick-tempered but immensely kind," "Although he disagreed with the direction taken in recent years, he was held in high esteem by all who knew him."

  9. I've said it many times and I'll repeat it again...

Brendan Hughes was a leader who, like Bobby Sands, led from the front while the likes of Adams and McGuinness led from a safe distance.

In fact what is now becoming alarmingly clear is that Adams and McGuinness were being assured safe passage through the War by the British and their agents.

I remember Dolours recounting the time the 1st armalites were brought into Belfast and how while The Dark rode in the car with the newly acquired weapons, Adams arrived in a separate car.

What's certain, is had Brendan been in Bik's place, then Ten Men wouldn't have died on Hunger Strike.

Thatis one serious allegation to make against A Brave but deceased IRA commander "Brendan Hughes", can you post a link on here were this can be verified, If you can't then you should retract the accusation.

    Dolour's any price?.

They both had more entitlement to a tricolour, more than adams paedo da did. You are walking on very very thin ice fella. Adams called more cease fires than anyone in history, Just to appease the British wgh groomed the top echelon into the british political system, more spis/agents than mi5. the whole nutting squad were agents , and , quite a few are still within sf, he told donaldson to go to his cottage and he would sort something out, He did that alright,he is nothing but a british agent , a lying piece of shite , and very devious , Brits new he was in the ra in 72?. think that one out. They don't want to upset the apple cart , YET.

  11. Is that a threat to Gerard Hodgins from Michael Henry from sinn fein ?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mark-

That's no threat lad and I never heard of any mark being made on Mr
    Hodgins-

Its just that those who make these
claims are usually dead or die shortly after-just the way of life in these parts-

  13. MichaelH,

    Gerry Adams telling lies.

republicans by keeping silent are in effect protecting this scumbag and his mate Gerry Itwasntme they and their cronies

Dunno marty. Maybe they are keeping quiet because vols know if 'they admit' everything they will go down for two years while Gerry & Martin will still be walking around free.

Unless there is an amnesty and combatants are allowed to tell 'warts & all' free from charge, repercussions etc a lot of people are going to take secrets to the grave with them.

  14. Mickey,

imagination is a powerful thing and if you believe strong enough you can block out the light of day.
What reason would the late Vol. Brendan Hughes have to lie?

Where exactly do you think Gerry Adams would be if it were not for the many dedicated volunteers that risked everything in the belief they were just in fighting the British occupation?
It must have been a severe blow to the man when his friend Judas sold every inch that was fought and paid for in blood.

Adams would be pulling pints and serving them up to his sicko brother.

If there was a scale for measuring truth Adams wouldn’t weigh an ounce on the other hand with all his lies he certainly would top out at over the ton.

Brendan Hughes was dedicated to removing the British Adams is dedicated to himself and sells his betrayal as the hollow victory it is.

It is no wonder he fled the North as I am sure in his mind on that side of the border he has himself convinced he lives in a united Ireland.

  15. It is very important to embrace the depraved expressions of despair emanating from the Sinn Féin minion.

It is the evidence of the clearest lines of demarcation having been drawn. This is a victory for truth.

Republican's opposed to any petty internal settlement are the democrats despite being criminalized as archaic beasts. It was our legitimate political beliefs that found us attacked, kidnapped, our Volunteers murdered, our names slandered and houses picketed until our exile. Despite all of these assaults on truth, truth never responded in kind. The bully boy broy harriers have come to the end of their road and men and women of integrity like Dolorus and Brendan sent them to this end with their humanity and courage.

It is a compliment to be slandered by the Michael Henry's of this world, an honour to be apart from evil.
