By failing to replace Gary Cahill with Rio Ferdinand, the England manager Roy Hodgson has compounded his original error.

As the European Championships get under way, the first matches having been played, TPQ carries a timely piece from guest writer Mick Hall on the ethics of the English teams management . It first appeared on the blog Organized Rage on 5 June 2012

With the championship due to begin at the end of this week, Roy Hodgson was given an opportunity to right this wrong, when defender Gary Cahill  was ruled out of the tournament after being injured in England’s friendly against Belgium. But instead of recalling Ferdinand to the squad, a man who has won 81 caps for his country, Hodgson chose the inexperienced Liverpool fullback Martin Kelly as a replacement for Cahill.

It seems to me with this decision Hodgson has compounded his original error to leave Rio out of the squad. When he first excluded him he said he had left him out for "football reasons" rather than concerns about whether his body could hold up to a major tournament football. Which would have made him look ridiculous as Rio has played in all of Manchester United’s games since January of this year.

That Hodges never explained what those "footballing reasons" are makes one less inclined to believe him, the more so now when he has replaced Cahill with an inexperienced youngster like Martin Kelly. Hodgson is known for his defensive football and it makes little sense to go with a promising yet raw 22-year-old who plays predominantly at right-back. When Rio a serial Premier League winner, with a 14-year international career encompassing 81 caps is available for selection.

One cannot help believing "footballing reasons" have absolutely nothing to do with the English manager’s decision and once again it comes down to the malign influence of John Terry within the English dressing room.

If Rio Ferdinand were in the Squad, as a former England captain he would become an alternative pole of influence. A number of the England players who are known to despise Terry would gravitate to Rio, this is not his fault but Roy Hodgins for having Terry in the squad. It seems to me the England manager will have additional problems if John Terry is convicted when he returns to court on 9th July, accused of racially abusing Ferdinand's younger brother, Anton, during Chelsea's defeat at Queens Park Rangers last October.

Whilst Terry has a long history of managing to get himself out of all sorts of unsavoury trouble, in Anton Ferdinand he may have met his match. For not only is he determined to have his day in court, the CPS looks like it has a water tight case. I cannot see how calling Anton a 'fucking black cunt' in full view of thousands of QPR fans and TV cameras, can be denied or brushed off as typical football banter. After all, thankfully when it comes to racism in football, England is no longer like the Ukraine, the co-hosts of the European championship.

If John Terry is found guilty Roy Hodgins will have some explaining to do as to why he preferred John Terry in his squad whilst he was on bail for a racist offence. The more so if England crash out of the European Cup in the early stages.

  1. This issue will give more ammo to the media when England predictably crash out after swagger about like they had won it already. Woy is another Graham Taylor..over rated in the extreme.

Come on the Leprechauns today..we can get England in Quarter finals...if England make it that far.

  2. I think Hodgson if it is his decision has made a serious mistake here and it will have long term implications for English football Mick.
When asked about his trip to Auschwitz,John Terry replied"it was terrible,a real shock, total disrepair, its going to be ages before we get it running again..monkey chants have disrupted Englands training session in Krakow today.John Terry has been warned if he does it again he will be sent home....John Terry was brought to tears when he visited Auschwitz,he couldnt get the showers working for Jermaine Defoe or Ashley Cole...when my child was born John Terry burst into the delivery room, picked up the baby and said it was down to him!this was a dilemma;Did he actually screw my wife or was he just taking the credit..

  4. Mick,

I think you have called this one wrong. Ferdinand is not good material at international level. And that is not because I am a Pool supporter!

The comedy will start when England turn out. This time fortnight he will be Wotten Woy.

their commentators make them the best entertainment in any competition. The expectation and the hope and the total ignorance of reality. They are a joy to watch self destruct.

  9. Larry,

this is what amazes me about them. They actually behave as if England is going to do something totally unexpected like winning or playing good soccer. Watching Italy and Spain here. England just cannot reach that level of football. Bet Messi wishes he were Spanish. It is like the Barcelona team out there.

watched it here. If we can scrape a win now tonight another point might make it a wonderful 2012. Be great if we went through and the English went home. I noticed BBC not showing the Ireland game.

  11. Larry,

I am in front of the box now but have no real appetite for this game. I would like to see Ireland win it but doubt if they can. After watching Spain I know the quality can only go down

  12. Irish Euro 2012 over after one game. Spain will beat that team by 4 minimum. Agh well. feel for the fans...spending all that money at this time...team is megga poor. The fans had better just make a holiday of it. Support France.

    Dunphy at it now again.

  13. Larry,

can they even emerge with a point? Who is going to give it to them?

  14. No. They will be a total flop and i'm disgusted already at RTE pundits getting at Trap'. They are becoming like their English counterparts. Hope they pull back from that carry on. The team is 3rd class at best.

  15. Larry,

I doubt if there is much could be done by anybody with that team. Hard to get excited about them. Spain look good. Should be hard to beat. Thought their football flowed better tonight than it did in the World Cup. Still, early days

  16. they seemed so disorganised, when it was 1 - 1 i thought they were in with a chance, but alas that was not to be, I can't understand why he didn't bring Mc Clean on, I hope he is not holding him back to play him in italy and spain matches, its no use anyone blaming the manager either.

  17. Mick why you are getting all upset about England making an ass of themselves again is anyone’s guess . I for one fully support Roy and the FA with a bit of luck they will get thru to the final and get beaten on penaliltes by Germany. Ask anyone who loves football will give you the same answer, so if there is more controversy then bring it on, Rio in my opinion is finished at international level, his tackling was never the strongest but now its non existent, give youth a chance and at 22 Kelly is not really that green, The FA thru interviewing Roy would have known his choice of Captain, so if their happy Roy is happy the fans will love him if they win and hate if they lose same old same old
My impression of Roy would never be that of a racist but then some people need something anything to write about

ffs, us Irish will never change, its in our blood to fight each other, no matter who wins , we always end up disagreeing with each other, its always the Pro v Anti or , Anti v Pro. If by a miracle The Irish Team Get two wins in a row then they have a chance, My prediction for the France v England match tonight , France 3 - 1 England.
