Putting the Kids to Sleep

At first I was only half paying attention to this but as it went on I grew horrified until I realised I was merely allowing myself to be taken in. Sensing that that my wife was listening to my protestations of ‘murder’ I assumed the sheepish grin to mask a feeling of foolishness!

In two years time this very week my own daughter will 13. What life changing decision will I be confronted with when she succumbs to textomania and rolling eye syndrome?

A Trophy

Liverpool won the Carling League Cup this afternoon. The first trophy in six years they took it on penalties, which is always a spoiler on the sweet taste of any victory. It is how Liverpool have managed to win their last two trophies, in 2005 and 2006. Better at taking penalties than outfield play they must be relieved that the toss of a coin no longer decides games. Even then Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam managed to miss their spot kicks, causing the collective red blood pressure on the stands to rocket. It took the ever reliable Dirk Kuyt to settle the nerves.

Just as it was going into extra time I took the plunge while talking to Ed Moloney. Arsenal had just duffed his team, Spurs, 5-2. Ed told me he had a good day to which I responded ‘Arsenal had a good day too.’ Which was tempting a fate that looked likely to come back on me once Cardiff equalised in the closing minutes of extra time.

Great to see some silverware disturb the dust in the Anfield trophy cabinet but a League Cup winner is a long way off from being a League champion. That is the elusive one that is longed for on Merseyside. It remains to be seen if Kenny can reign over a kingdom rather than a fiefdom.

Jailing the Victim

Just what was Judge Paul Carney doing when he jailed a foreign national who was so terrified that she refused to give evidence against the men she claimed had gang raped her when she was three months pregnant? Earlier the woman was compelled by the judge to approach the dock and identify one of them as her assailant. One newspaper commented that ‘the visibly terrified woman was made stand in front of the accused men.’ A barrister was later reported to have said he was convinced the woman was about to collapse, such was her distress.

Later she overdosed on vodka and sleeping pills. She left a note telling her partner "Don't be mad, I can't go today. I'm terrified. I love you. I will be with my friends."

Garda who found her rushed her off to hospital. When she recovered the judge jailed her for having missed the court, making an insensitive comment that ‘if she has to spend a long time in prison herself waiting for a re-trial that's her fault.’

Without passing judgement on the facts in this case, the stance of Judge Carney is an ominous development for any woman who has been raped. Which of them would want to give evidence of their ordeal in front of Judge Carney? If his behaviour is not severely publicly rebuked and he not forced to apologise to his victim, women subjected to rape might be tempted to bypass the criminal justice system altogether.

Perhaps a night in the cells might help Judge Carney cool his heels.

  2. Or a night in Maynooth that could teach him about rape,

  3. Re:Judge Carney, I don't think an apology is adequate enough. He should be dismissed or at least, not stand over a trial with such a sensitive issue.

  5. lol re the vid yeah it had me for abit... loved the Dr ramble re 'random synapses firing...' Textomania is pandemic I cannot bear the thumb twitch thingo kids do on fones. Does me head in. They text without looking down and keep talking to u whilst conversing in text with their friends. Riles me big time.

Incarcerate Judge Carney for sure - what a piece of regressed, misogynistic shit he is. It is diabolical enough she was raped whilst pregnant That would be a hell of hells (two victims the mother and baby in utero traumatised) I read about the case a few days back = felt sick to my heart for her. The terror she reportedly exhibited is congruent with trauma victims - it would be most difficult to pull an authentic looking pseudo stunt of terror. Besides if she was lying why would she want to top herself. This judge and his approach/stance will impact ALL rape victims both male and female in their decisionmaking to go through with prosecuting offenders. It is hard to believe a bastard like him exists in the 21st century but he does.

Having twice experienced the trauma of a teenage daughter and then a granddaughter, I feel your trepidation and pain, but this is not the way, there are self help groups out there which can get you through this. As your in Ireland there is a woman called Mrs Iris Robinson whose psychiatrist friend helped a family member get over the disgrace of having a straight son. With Iris help and advice their son now lives a perfectly happy life as a trans sexual in Pattaya, Thailand.

  9. Mackers,
I remember getting into a taxi a few years back and a very agitated driver wanting to know if I had any teenage kids.
I said, I had a teenage son and he replied God Help You!
He then proceeded to tell me he had two teenagers at home and had not had a conversation with either in months as they seemed to be constantly in a moronic state.
We ended up having a laugh about it all.
    Thanks for the footage, brilliant!

  11. A wee question for my auld a cara Mickeyboy ! A cara in todays vatican times p 14 there is the story headlined;SINN FEIN to attend unionst events...so to cut to the chase Mickeyboy, what part will you play to mark the centenary of the founding of the uvf,we know Gerry will supply the table from one of his big houses, Martyboy will supply the blood he has loads of it not his of course, bangers will supply the hats (they all wore daft hats in them days)and will preform the quote"with a Mannlicher rifle in one hand and the queens shilling in the other"the rest of the qsf mla,s will be foot stools, they are already well rehearsed, so mo cara it looks like the only parts left are cannon fodder same old story just a different coat. .

    ReplyDelete
  12. Marty,

did you say Danny Thumbs would supply the hats or the rats?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Also from the same story Peter red berret Clontibret Robinson, was asked if he would go to events to mark the 1916 rising he said" fuck them"and then said"ops the last time I said that was to Irish and she did"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Marty-

What part will i play in the centenary of the founding of the uvf-

depends on how much free drink will be at those events-

D.u.p minister Nelson the pirate McCausland said that he would not rule out attending an event commemorating the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising- bully for him- but to each their own-

I knew two people who were killed by the uvf during the 80s- and like most on the Quill i have went to wakes and funerals of people who were killed by the uvf- so i have no love for that group- but i dont hate them-they are not important enough to hate

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mickeyboy they may not be important enough to hate in your mind but your party wants to venerate them, the same people who spawned the Shankill butchers ffs,and yet for all qsf,s grovelling Robinson has said he wont attend a 1916 commemoration, come to think of it why would qsf want to either? surely they will be more at home with the uvf,s

    ReplyDelete
  16. Marty-

The 100 1916 commemoration is not for another four years- Robinson could change his mind by that time [ he is not the first politician that can be accused of that ] Robinson might not even be the joint first minister by that stage or he might not be the leader of the D.u.p in four years time- i would lose no sleep over him-

    ReplyDelete
  17. Michaelhenry,

but Robinson never has been joint first minister. Nor has Martin McGuinness for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What the f##k am I talking about Mickeyboy, centenary celebrations!sure didnt Martyboy promise a united Ireland by 2016,so I suppose your comment about Peter Clontibert Robinson not being first minister is correct,do you think he will accept the TD position for east Belfast, certainly will expand Irish,s hunting grounds, there are lots of youngsters around Dublin..

    ReplyDelete
  19. First minister, deputy first minister.justice minister, mla ,what a waste of time and money, when you really think about it ,Marians interment tells the tale, reminds me of the saying I,m the boss in this house, and I have the wifes permission to say so.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So Mickeyboy back to an earlier point you mentioned free drink at these uvf celebrations, so can we take it you,ll have no problems supping with the likes of Willie Mc Crea, and whats left of the Shankill Butchers,if your lucky you might get to toast those who butchered the Miami showband like Robin the Jackal Jackson,

    ReplyDelete
  21. Marty-

I will toast that the Jackal is dead- drinking with McCrea would leave my drink dead- he puts it about that he does not drink but his red eyes tells another story- he is either a secret alcoholic or the devil himself-

    AM-

Are we gonna split hairs over the joint first ministers title-

    ReplyDelete
  22. Michaelhenry,

Not at all. Robinson is First Minister and his deputy is McGuinness. The first ministry was never split. And you can rest assured that were Martin to get the first minister he would not be referring to Peter as the joint.

  23. As if the republic was not in enough financial diffs,we are told today that qsf,s Aengus lightfinger O Snodaigh TD was caught stealing 50k euro worth of printer cartridges from the Dail.maybe he really does believe by taking these cartridges, that the pen is mightier than the sword!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Marty,

I don't know what is behind it but one thing is for sure: the Master had the hughest expense bill of any TD - not a word of criticism from SF about it in terms of it being excessive. Yet when Aengus does something which he can plausibly claim was to churn out leaflets, MLM says it was excessive. Had the Master got the cartridges therw ould not have a been a word from within the party other than to say he is the greatest leader ever and needs to get his thoughts down on paper for the adoring millions.

    ReplyDelete
  25. FFS Anthony first printing cartridges, what next staple guns!

  26. Marty-

The pen is mightier than the sword when you stick that Bik into the opponents eye-

  27. Marty,

All a storm in a teacup. The guy was only toning up.

    Michaelhenry,

while you are having a laugh, there actually are those who would believe that sort of thing! The Master certainly believes it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well you know what I said to the master Anthony.."I see the penis enlargement pills are working for you",your getting a bigger dick by the day"!!!! this cannot be said to the male followers, due to lack of balls!!

  29. Mick and Nuala,

that is funny on both counts. managing this one at 11 is a challenging experience. It is a fight a minute

  32. Can you imagine the sentence a court would hand down to a kid in a Dublin court if they were caught thieving on that scale, reminds me of the old Andy Capp cartoon. He was asked about his £70 debt, he says "steal £100 and your a thief, steal £100k and your a business man.steal £100 million and your a government, I,m getting there"

  35. Is the Northern Bank robbery £25 million some kind of record, 1 token charge no serious investigation.every other large scale robbery one reads about, the cops have someone banged to rights within weeks, here the cops have failed miserably and not a dickeybird about ongoing investigations, and yet those suspected of this crime, and it was a criminal act have now impressive property portfolios and none from the cid to the local members of the policing board ever raise this question, its almost like it never happened.the fact that none here has ever been brought to book suggests to me that this must be a record and that the psni are not fit for purpose...

  36. Tonights BBC Newsline tells us about a case of a corrupt business man and two civil servants who were involved in the procurement of closed circuit television cameras for military bases here in norn iorn, this contract as you can imagine was worth millions of pounds, all three have been found guilty and the judge has warned the business man that he faces a hefty fine, now what irks me about all this is that a few months ago a single parent mother was convicted of stealing a £10 pair of jeans and sentenced to three months gaol time, is this not proof if needed how badly the them and us divide really is.no wonder Lady justice is blindfolded..
